Hiking

I love hiking. We used to go all the time growing up, whether it was at christmas time or to the blue mountains, we did a lot of bushwalking. I have fond memories of those times.

My sister in law Karleen has adopted the idea of family activities to be centered around becoming fitter, and exercising. I of course LOVE that idea and quickly stole the idea.. Luckily for me Karleen is the sharing type. She talked of the hike her family did together and we thought it would be great to be able to do some of these hikes together too.
When they brought Nauvoo home, our two families headed off to discover a hiking track in West Auckland. It was a great idea to go together, as the cousins again enjoyed their time together.

The hike was supposed to take 3 hours one way. The first part was about 1/2 hour track to a waterfall. Since we had a late start to the morning, we stopped here and had lunch. It is the middle of summer here so there was not a huge amount of water, just enough to have a good waterfall and watch the eels in the rock pools.

After this, we headed back the same path that met up with the second part of the hike. Arama and Ashley took the younger 2 boys in the car to meet us at the other end, and Karleen and I took off with the excited rest of the kids. The track was supposed to take us 2 hours, we were done in about an hour.
We actually had time to sit and wait for the cars to arrive to pick us up!! Traffic......yearrrh....

The hike was close to Muriwai Beach, which we checked out. It was very windy and extremely choppy. I saw my first blue bottle in YEARS,  I have actually not seen a blue bottle here in NZ before.. there is always a first I suppose.

It was a really awesome day, and we will do it again soon. My body felt great on Saturday - but walking around on Sunday? hmmmm that was another story!

The Nastiest bug creates a war Zone

This entry has no photo's but as you read on you will see why. I did however need to be recorded for posterity!!! and to say We survived. Renata had been at school only 2 days, He went to his Last Montessori   Class on a Thursday. Friday morning Came and he began to throw up. Within the next 3 days 5 of my 6 children were down with the nastiest vomiting/diarrhea bug I have ever encountered. Arama was away on business, so I was on my own. This bug has had a reputation in our community, taking no prisoners and not missing any members of the family. Yes that bad. I was grateful Arama was away, but my big boy was due to go on his Pinacle Camp for a week with school on the Monday. I prayed that he would not get it. It was Fast Sunday the Sunday before so we both fasted he would not get sick before or ON his camp. (his first 2 days was a 2 day treck in the bush and the only way out was via rescue helecopter – not an option thanks) Just the thought of him possibly gett...
I LOVE the movie 'Tangled'. It is such a fun movie and suits my humor to a 'T'. I watched it the other weekend with my kids, and have at times been reminded of that funny song " I've got a Dream". Yes you know the one. Anyway one day I was miraculously sitting in the car by my self. (The miraculous thing was that I was by myself, how often does that happen...) So I thought about what MY dreams are, not the kids not my darling husbands but MY dream. I was reminded the ultimate dream for me would be to be able to sing all day every day. Write music (that people would actually LOVE and not just say so to be polite) To be able to sing all day for a living... for LIFE! That is my dream. Dream on right?! Well I also reminded too that you have to make your own dreams come true. Life is not a movie... well at least for me anyway... we need to have our dreams and then go about making those dreams come true. Where possible ofcourse, I don't think the dream of...

teaching independance

I like to think I encourage independance in our home. Helping our kids to be confident that they can do many things on their own. making themselves something to eat is one of these things. For the older boys, I have taught how to cook, the younger ones it is making a sandwich, or whipping cream, making cordial drinks (which they are sooo much better than me now)  even mixing pancake mixture.. Since we watched the Junior Masterchef competition on TV, our kids have really enjoyed getting in there. Arama has made dinner for almost the last week and a half. It was first a trade off so he wouldn't do the dishes after but he seems to be enjoying it. I am more than happy to accomodate too as they will be able to feed themselves when they get bigger - mission etc. Hikawera has also risen to the challenge or mastering the skill of getting himself something to eat. He often hums when he does it (that means he is happy). This day, I watched him place out the 5 slices of bread and them syst...
