A Whanau delicacy - Lambs Tails

Have you ever tried Lambs tails? No? What is it? Let me explain.

When lambs get big enough, say a couple of months old, their tails are docked off. This makes for a cleaner animal. What is so interesting about that you may ask? Well it is what happens to the tails after this that is 'interesting'.

Arama is from a place in New Zealand called Hawkes Bay. It is the fruit bowl of New Zealand and with rich soils, beautiful countryside and amazing beaches all within minutes of each other, it is what some refer to as paradise - to us - HOME.
Here in the Hawkes bay it is a delicacy to eat Lambs tails. Even talking about them gets the mouth watering and that homer simpson mmmmmm! There is usually a hunt down for tails and if you have them, be sure the family and friends will be close by to share in the abundance.
Here in Auckland we have found the 'culture' a little different. Our dear friends Kelvin and Pip have abouyt 1900 lambs this year and have started docking. They could not give the tails away here, so they would usually throw them out. Needless to say, we have SCORED!!

It was half our family's first time trying it and I think they liked it. First you prepare the fire.

Then you put a metal grill or basket on top of the fire. Next comes the Lambs Tails. You take the lambs tails

Thank you ren, and throw them onto the fire. When they whistle and all the wool is burnt off, we take the tail off the fire, Pull off the outer layer, dust with salt and bon apetite. Lambs tails.

What do you say? Wanna try it?

  1. oh my gosh!!! that is insane! Clearly I am absolutely a city girl because my mouth waters when I read that but more with the lean towards being sick. That would be right up Mark & Jessica's alley though. Nice fire like that would be only used for cooking marshmallows i have to say.

Flashback - Rotten teeth?

I was putting the boys to bed the other night, and as usual you go through the usual teeth toilet, bed etc... I asked Rakai, did you brush your teeth? He said no. (He was honest) So, I said, "do you want your teeth to fall out while you are asleep?" He answered with a sad look on his face, "yes, cause then I can get some money". Oh that was such a Rakai thing to say!! I had to counter that (trying not to laugh) by telling him that the tooth fairy doesn't give money for rotten teeth! Then, Hikawera pipes up saying he got $5 for a rotten (dead actually from being banged) tooth that the dentist had to pull out. I had to go into real damage control then!! Rakai comes out with the funniest things sometimes. He is golden.

Volleyball

Teancum really enjoys playing volleyball. He jumped right into the teams at boys high, and within a couple of weeks, he was in the 'A' team. They came runner up this season to a solid Hillcrest school team. An awesome group of boys.

Hakarimata's again!
