5 at last

Hikawera had been counting down the sleeps till his 5th birthday. Friday morning arrived with the question. "is it my birthday today?" He was so excited.

He opened his Good morning presents. His cousin Tawhaio surprised us with a visit and a gift also. Thank you Tawhaio!

Hikawera was due to attend his last pre visit for school so we started running.  Hikawera has been enjoying making his lunch with the older ones the night before and packing his bag for the day ahead.

It was a great morning at school with Hikawera sitting his first spelling test. He did really well, being able to spell I, am, is, a. Not bad for a boy who has not "officially" started school. ( In NZ you have to be 5 years old to be counted as officially attending school. His first "official" day is Tuesday 7th June).
He has several children from his rugby team that are in his class too so friends are not a problem.

Once morning tea was finished, his class sang him Happy Birthday and wished him a great day. He in return gave the class each a glow stick to take home. (cakes and lollies were discouraged due to allergies and such)

Now, it was time to hit the town. For our younger 4 and I to go to town is a BIG thing. We don't get out too often so a birthday shopping treat was in order. The weather was blowing and grey so it was a perfect thing to do. It was so much fun watching the boys looking at all the toys. The OOOh's and AAAhh's and WOW LOOK AT THIS!!. With our little budget, I was impressed with the maturity Hikawera showed when I explained and negotiated, "if you get this you have to put this back". He made great choices and came away with some wonderful presents.

We spent most the afternoon in Albany, then after picking up Nauvoo from school and finishing the cake we met dad and the big boys at the Kaukapakapa Town Hall and headed in for his birthday dinner. This time. Burger King!

Now, if you notice above left, Hikawera has a gun toy in his hand. This is one of his presents. it shoots foam discs about 6m. On the photo on the right, you can see the disc shooting up into the air and Arama ready to catch it. Needless to say it's a favorite.

Home to have the cake was next. It was not my best work, I must admit. (It is supposed to be the number 5) but with blue icing and that many lollies, I think I was forgiven.
Now, everyone knows the blowing of the candles is a 'sacred act' for the birthday boy/girl. This is taken on take 2! (someone elses lips puckered up and blew too on the first take. He was not impressed...)

Birthday activities can be a tiresome business, so with the happy thoughts of the long weekend before us, and no netball or rugby games to have to get up for the next day, we all settled in for a long night of R&R. Happy Birthday Hikawera. We love you!!

The Nastiest bug creates a war Zone

This entry has no photo's but as you read on you will see why. I did however need to be recorded for posterity!!! and to say We survived. Renata had been at school only 2 days, He went to his Last Montessori   Class on a Thursday. Friday morning Came and he began to throw up. Within the next 3 days 5 of my 6 children were down with the nastiest vomiting/diarrhea bug I have ever encountered. Arama was away on business, so I was on my own. This bug has had a reputation in our community, taking no prisoners and not missing any members of the family. Yes that bad. I was grateful Arama was away, but my big boy was due to go on his Pinacle Camp for a week with school on the Monday. I prayed that he would not get it. It was Fast Sunday the Sunday before so we both fasted he would not get sick before or ON his camp. (his first 2 days was a 2 day treck in the bush and the only way out was via rescue helecopter – not an option thanks) Just the thought of him possibly gett

teaching independance

I like to think I encourage independance in our home. Helping our kids to be confident that they can do many things on their own. making themselves something to eat is one of these things. For the older boys, I have taught how to cook, the younger ones it is making a sandwich, or whipping cream, making cordial drinks (which they are sooo much better than me now)  even mixing pancake mixture.. Since we watched the Junior Masterchef competition on TV, our kids have really enjoyed getting in there. Arama has made dinner for almost the last week and a half. It was first a trade off so he wouldn't do the dishes after but he seems to be enjoying it. I am more than happy to accomodate too as they will be able to feed themselves when they get bigger - mission etc. Hikawera has also risen to the challenge or mastering the skill of getting himself something to eat. He often hums when he does it (that means he is happy). This day, I watched him place out the 5 slices of bread and them syst

Flashback - Rotten teeth?

I was putting the boys to bed the other night, and as usual you go through the usual teeth toilet, bed etc... I asked Rakai, did you brush your teeth? He said no. (He was honest) So, I said, "do you want your teeth to fall out while you are asleep?" He answered with a sad look on his face, "yes, cause then I can get some money". Oh that was such a Rakai thing to say!! I had to counter that (trying not to laugh) by telling him that the tooth fairy doesn't give money for rotten teeth! Then, Hikawera pipes up saying he got $5 for a rotten (dead actually from being banged) tooth that the dentist had to pull out. I had to go into real damage control then!! Rakai comes out with the funniest things sometimes. He is golden.
