The REAL cross country.

Do you remember running cross country at school? Yes, I remember running the perimeter and surrounding suburbs of our school with our runners on. Our main hurdle being cars or other pedestrians.

Kaukapakapa school had their annual cross country day on Friday. The kids have been practicing for the last few weeks. We have had minor complaints of aching legs - great for growing bodies. The day was beautiful. The sun was out and the polar blast had gone back to where it came from. We had settled our lambs in that morning and was looking forward to the day out.

We arrived at the school. Nauvoo was the first to race. I was quite amused to see that their cross country course. Not only around the school but out in the neighbouring paddock, around the town hall and back on to the school grounds.

I wondered at first why we were asked to send a change of clothes and a towel. Nauvoo said the towel was for wiping the sweat off her face when she finished, but as you read on you will see the real reason why they needed the change of clothes and towel.

The smell of cows was fresh in the air and Nauvoo was off. For her first cross country race she did really well. Dug in there to the end. Through the course though, there were several mud pits they could run through. I found it really amusing to watch some kids plough through it and then others (including Nauvoo) run towards it, pause when they get to it, thentiptoe through it cautiosly and take off again on the other side of the mud to continue on!!
After a great effort Nauvoo finished and came 13th. Awesome effort daughter!

Now take a close look at these girls legs... can you see the mud? Pretty cool huh. How many of us can say we looked like that at the end of our cross country races?

Now you can see why the instruction was to bring a change of clothes and a towel. they had to literally wash themselves down afterwards.  I felt sorry for those that were wearing light colored clothes!! hehe Thank you Nappysan!!!

Hikawera was up next. He was waiting patiently for his turn.

Their race was not so far, around the field of the school 3 times. Hik had been doing quite well in his practices so I was told so I was interested to see how he did today.

I must tell you this was the most frustrating race I have ever watched!! Let me tell you why!

Hikawera started really well. He was in the top 3, staying with the leaders for the first lap, then something funny started happening.  He ran through the first checkpoint (they were marked every lap they did to keep track of who had done what) and then he stopped, completely stopped and looked back, waiting for his mate. when his mate came within 3 feet of him, he turned and took off on him! He started running like Dash does on the Incredibles movie - hands and feet going really fast - sprinting - and caught up to the leaders again (which were about 100m ahead by then). He kept doing this for the rest of the race. I was pulling my hair out!!!! He was just having fun, and tormenting his friend I am sure!

There is his mate behind him there!

Hikawera LOVES to run and be active. I KNOW that he could have easily won the race if he wanted to - or if he was interested..but bless him he wasn't! His other friends Beau and Tom came first and second and my handsome boy came.....

3rd!! Well done Hikawera, Don't you just love this boy!!!!

The Nastiest bug creates a war Zone

This entry has no photo's but as you read on you will see why. I did however need to be recorded for posterity!!! and to say We survived. Renata had been at school only 2 days, He went to his Last Montessori   Class on a Thursday. Friday morning Came and he began to throw up. Within the next 3 days 5 of my 6 children were down with the nastiest vomiting/diarrhea bug I have ever encountered. Arama was away on business, so I was on my own. This bug has had a reputation in our community, taking no prisoners and not missing any members of the family. Yes that bad. I was grateful Arama was away, but my big boy was due to go on his Pinacle Camp for a week with school on the Monday. I prayed that he would not get it. It was Fast Sunday the Sunday before so we both fasted he would not get sick before or ON his camp. (his first 2 days was a 2 day treck in the bush and the only way out was via rescue helecopter – not an option thanks) Just the thought of him possibly gett
I LOVE the movie 'Tangled'. It is such a fun movie and suits my humor to a 'T'. I watched it the other weekend with my kids, and have at times been reminded of that funny song " I've got a Dream". Yes you know the one. Anyway one day I was miraculously sitting in the car by my self. (The miraculous thing was that I was by myself, how often does that happen...) So I thought about what MY dreams are, not the kids not my darling husbands but MY dream. I was reminded the ultimate dream for me would be to be able to sing all day every day. Write music (that people would actually LOVE and not just say so to be polite) To be able to sing all day for a living... for LIFE! That is my dream. Dream on right?! Well I also reminded too that you have to make your own dreams come true. Life is not a movie... well at least for me anyway... we need to have our dreams and then go about making those dreams come true. Where possible ofcourse, I don't think the dream of

The lost Necklace - by Nauvoo Puriri

Nauvoo and Hikawera had student led conferences last week. It was great to see their progress in class. I love how each child has a set of goals they knowingly must work towards. When they achieve this goal they work on another goal. Hikawera is a bit of a dark horse... full of surprises. He does really well in class and he is achieving great results. He has been at school since June 7th and one of his goals is to know 50 sight words by the end of this term. He already knows 21 words (tested him on monday of this week). It is such a rewarding feeling watching him write and spell correctly these words. I was sooo impressed. (needless to say with the amount of praises I gave him because I was so impressed will keep him wanting to succeed I am sure!) Nauvoo's teacher loves to describe her as a "little sponge". She soaks everything in and retains it. Nauvoo also has goals to which one of them with her spelling was to move up to the next set, which this week she excitedly ca
